With winter behind us at last, Tim Barnaby offers a memorable outing in the Lakes

Hurrah - spring is here! We're always glad to cast off the shackles of the long, dark months and welcome the uplifting embrace of the most optimistic season but this year we have more reason to do so after what must count as one of the coldest winters in living memory.

But - thank goodness - that's all behind us now and softer delights await as we head towards summer. To celebrate the start of a new walking season, here's a super outing in the Lakes to get the juices flowing again. A very enjoyable 5.3-mile tour from Elterwater. near Ambleside, this will leave you glad to be alive and full of those joys of spring.
